Interpersonal Skills In Workplace

Interpersonal skills in workplace are behavioral skills that help an individual to connect with his or her surrounding people. Very much like our fingerprints or our DNA, every personality is unique and has varied characteristics. At the workplace, to be able to deal with all such different personalities and be accepted by all of them is what makes a person known for his interpersonal skills.


At our workplace our success is judged not just by our singular hard work but our relationships with our colleagues too play an important part at it. Professionally it is the synergistic efforts of a team that excels, and to be able to lead that team often decides our administrative & managerial qualities.


Interpersonal skills in workplace are genetically pre-existing in nature but with some sincere efforts towards acquiring such traits, every person can be a pro at such skills. These traits are not very complex in nature but just some simple behavioural habits that need to be practised regularly.


Interpersonal Skills in Workplace: Personal Traits –


Be a good human being: This is the first condition towards being good at interpersonal skills. Compassion, empathy, honesty, sincerity and being diligent make one a nice human being. Such skills are often appreciated by the fellow colleagues and they develop an initial liking for such individuals. This initial acceptance helps an individual to gain attention and respect.


Sound listening skills: It is generally said that we should spend 80% of our energy in Listening and rest 20% in speaking. Listening doesn’t necessarily mean to agree with someone, in fact this way you show the other person that you pay sincere respect to his point of view.

Sincerely listening to others helps us understand them better and be able to take better decisions for them. In return, our colleagues too listen patiently to what we have to say. This creates a sound two way communication between both the people.


Trustworthy:  Our relationship with others is often marked by the level of confidence they place in us. A man is known by the words that he keeps. Our commitment levels should be realistic and be made with some serious thinking. Once we have done commitment, our approach should be to fulfil them as fairly as possible. Being trustworthy makes our colleagues, share their thoughts with us without any fear of being ditched.


Know what you say: The words that you utter should be prudently thought off. As on a workplace, people tend to pay a lot of attention to what you say. Mere gossiping around would make people to take you very lightly and pay no respect to your thoughts. 


Positive attitude: Our attitude often decides the positive ness of our workplace. To work with a positive frame of mind inspires our fellow colleagues to be more productive then they usually are. This also initiates a flow of innovative ideas & creativity that benefits the organization.


Interpersonal Skills in Workplace: Social Traits –


Accommodating: The personalities of human beings are very complex in nature. We can be very comfortable with some colleagues but equally annoyed with some. Therefore we need to try and start looking at the positive aspects of every individual as this lets us to focus on those qualities of an individual with which we are at ease.

At a work place we can’t afford to be choosy and be selective with our colleagues. We may have our personal likings but when it comes to work, we should to be able to work with any individual. One should be able to understand their fellow colleagues concerns, feelings and motives.


How to manage indifference through leadership? at a workplace there are various individuals. To be able to understand everybody’s point of view and be able to manage that indifference makes a person near and dear of all. This also brings out the leadership qualities of the individual in forefront as he has to organize the entire group and lead them to common organizational objectives.


Don’t criticise People: to make mistakes is very human and instead of criticizing people, one should encourage them to learn & raise their confidence level in a positive and friendly environment. As a consequence, the colleagues don’t shy away with their shortcomings instead they share a comfortable platform and work hard on the problem areas. This in also generates a sense of teamwork and credibility among the members.


Cooperative: cooperation is an integral part of interpersonal skills as, being able to help others generates a sense of emotional binding among colleagues. They develop a mutual admiration for each others capabilities. Instead of being competitive, they honestly and cooperatively work for common objectives in a friendly atmosphere.
